So there is no way that your brush picks up the color below because the layers are separated. As I mentioned, it has a similar functionality but its effect was on the layer above. That made your picture look more realistic than in would be using the Clipping Group alternative. When using preserve opacity you drew on the current and active layer which meant that your brush could also pick up the color you were drawing on. If I am not mistaken and it really is gone, are there ways to kinda get its effect back?
It was used to allow you to only draw over non-transparent pixels in the active layer and the options was located right below Clipping Group which works similar.
